These Aren't Your Grandma's Drapes, Or Are They?

Everything Old is New Again

Like most fashion trends, today's hot looks can be old and outdated tomorrow. A lot of times those out of style trends have a way of sneaking back onto the scene but in a slightly updated new way. A sort of twist on an old variation you could say. For example those awesome high rise Mom Jeans from the 90s. Now they are so much cooler because the style has been updated, perhaps with a new fabric, rips, or a new denim wash, or color. Not the same old jeans, but a similar style with a fresh, fun approach.

The same can be said about window treatments. Styles, colors, and trends come and go, but when they come back into play they look better, more hip, and on trend. So when thinking about having custom drapes made and your first thought is, "I don't want grandma's drapes," don't close off the all the possibilities. Those drapes are not outdated, and here's why.

A Fresh Take on an Old Style--Where the Magic Happens

When choosing draperies there are a few options to consider.

  • Function. Do you require privacy, or just as an accent to already existing window treatments.

  • Communication. What are the drapes saying about your personal style and feel of you home.

  • Purpose. Do you require black out, do you want insulation, do you want a drape that diffuses the light.

The Smallest Details Matter

There is an abundance of details to consider when choosing drapes, mainly because they are custom made to order and everybody has a unique style and a unique purpose for the drapes they want installed. There are a few things to consider when thinking about draperies for your windows. For example does the room have baseboard heaters, or is there a radiator under the window. Does the room have crown molding. Are your windows special shapes such as circular, or angle top, or is it a wall of windows? These are all the things a drapery designer will take into consideration when designing your beautiful drapes.

Once you figure out what your needs are then proceeding with the drapery design can begin. This is where the fun starts but also the challenges will present themselves. Why? Because there are so many details to consider! For example, is your home:

  • Traditional

  • Contemporary

  • Transitional

The drapes should fit with the overall design of your home. Each category will lend itself to all the details you may want to add to the drape like pleat style, trim, or banding. How will you open and close the drape? That needs to be addressed as well. There are options like motorization, or simply a baton pull.

Other factors involve whether or not you want a top treatment over the drape. You can add a valance or a cornice box. The ideas are limitless! Or, perhaps you want a rod without any top treatment. Then rods, rings, and finial styles need to be selected. These items are the icing on the cake, the part that pulls it all together and brings a harmonious and complete look to the window. I cannot stress enough that this cannot be overlooked. It would be like getting dressed and forgetting to add accessories to your outfit.
