Tricking The Mind With a Shutter Arch as a Valance

April Kempler

Lately most of the homes we have been in have very tall and very large window openings. This is a growing trend in home design.

But suppose you don't have tall windows, what can you do to make that window seem taller? A simple trick is to place a non-operational shutter arch over the top.

An example of this can be seen in the short video below:

A shutter arch was chosen in this particular case because the homeowner had other shutters in the room. So here, we chose to cover a wall rather than an actual window to achieve a special arch shape over the window. By implementing this technique our minds believe the height and shape of the window to be different from what it really is.

Isn't it amazing how wonderful the brain works and how we can "trick" it into thinking that something is there that really isn't. The French have a beautiful word for this: Trompe-l'oeil which translates as "deceive the eye"; typically this is applied to painting on a wall which fools the viewer into perceiving painted objects or spaces as real.

Note: Other forms can be used to make a short window taller: a Roman shade, or another type of material used as a valance. But, for a clean look this shutter arch cannot be beat.
